Female pedestrians get road sign recognition

Sweden's government has paved the way for road signs at pedestrian crossings that portray women rather than just men.

By the end of this year it will time to welcome Fru Gårman to the streets of the nation. The signs will be erected either beside or instead of those that depict her better-known husband Herr Gårman, a name that translates both as 'Mr Walkman' and 'This is where you walk'.

The National Road Administration has been given until October 1st to design the new sign, SVT reports.

The move comes after two local councils began making their own Fru Gårman signs in the interests of gender equity.

Hässleholm council ran into difficulties at the end of last year after the administration pointed to laws stating that a new road sign may not erected if it could be confused with an existing design.
