71-year-old woman detained for arson

A 71-year-old woman was remanded into custody on Saturday on suspicion of arson. Police suspect that she could be behind a series of fires in the Rosengård area of Malmö.

The woman was arrested on Wednesday evening. The two fires that she is suspected of starting occurred on April 10th.

At around 7.30 pm on April 10th a fire was discovered in a toilet at the City Gross supermarket in Rosengård's shopping centre.

"There was a risk that the fire would spread and you never know what could happen," said the district prosecutor Carl Renberg.

Later that evening a further fire was discovered in a cellar of the apartment block in which the 71-year-old woman lives on Sjöblads väg.

"According to my understanding the evidence is very strong," said Renberg.

The woman was remanded into custody on probable cause suspected of two counts of arson. The woman denies the charges.

Last year emergency services were called to 12 incidents of suspected fires on Sjöblads väg and so far this year there have been three further incidents.

As Carl Renberg is not in charge of the investigation into the other cases of suspected arson he was unwilling to comment on whether there is cause for the police to suspect the 71-year-old woman of involvement in the other fires.
