Eklund was remanded on suspicion of the murders of Engla Juncosa and Pernilla Hellgren. He was remanded on 'probable cause', a Swedish legal term meaning prosecutors believe the evidence against him is strong. Media interest was considerable as Eklund was brought before the court wearing a green T-shirt and tracksuit pants.

After the initial ruling court proceedings continued behind closed doors and details of the case are classified.

Eklund's lawyer Leif Silbersky commented that the case was in its infancy as it is not necessarily a question of murder but possibly manslaughter.

The forensic analysis of 10-year-old Engla Juncosa's body was completed on Thursday. Dalarna police are unwilling on Friday to confirm the cause of death.

"The investigating team has been given the preliminary results and there they will remain for the time being," said police spokesperson Sven-Åke Petters.

It has emerged that Eklund was informed earlier in the week that police suspect him of involvement in an attempted rape in Sandviken.

Police are comparing Eklund's crimes to a series of other unsolved cases both in Sweden and abroad. His DNA profile will be submitted to Interpol's international database.

"The reason being is to see if Eklund has been active in countries other than Sweden," said Petters.
