This represented a 2 percent increase on figures for 2006.

There were fewer teenage abortions (7,584) in 2007 than the previous year. The highest rates of teenage abortions were registered in Stockholm, Gothenburg and on the Baltic island of Gotland.

The number of induced abortions in Sweden has averaged between and 30,000 and 38,000 since the liberalization of abortion laws in 1975.

Abortions are most prevalent among women aged 20-24, followed by the age group 25-30 and then teenagers.

Almost 75 percent of induced abortions were performed before the end of the ninth week of pregnancy. The number of abortions performed after the 18th week represented one percent of the total.
