Five escape youth detention centre following unrest

Five boys have escaped following a disturbance at the Håkanstorp youth detention centre outside of Vingåker, about 150 kilometres west of Stockolm.

“Staff called themselves to say that there was no control over the young people there. The employees locked themselves in somewhere in order to ensure their safety,” said Kenneth Wiklund from the Eskilstuna police headquarters.

The boys may have succeeded in taking keys from the centre’s staff and then made their way out of the facility.

Wiklund didn’t know whether any staff members had been injured in the tumult which broke out at the detention centre on Wednesday evening, but according to his information, the staff felt “OK”.

Police therefore are devoting all their resources to searching for the escapees rather than talking to personnel about exactly what happened.

Three police dog teams are combing through forests in the area looking for the five boys.

“We’re driving around out in the forest with our flashing blue lights on so the youths won’t leave the area,” said Wiklund

Wiklund had no information on who exactly the escapees are or why they were being held at the Håkanstorp detention centre.

Håkanstorp is a treatment center for boys between 16 and 20-years-old who have problems with drug abuse, criminality and have serious psychosocial problems, according to the website of the National Board of Institutional Care (Statens institutionsstyrelse--SiS).
