The activists penetrated the perimeter at the airport and invaded the runway in a bid to prevent the deportation of a 23-year-old Eritrean national. All nine activists are members of the 'Ingen människa är illegal' ('Nobody is illegal') network, Dagens Nyheter reports.

"They are suspected of airport sabotage," police spokeswoman Ingela Claeson told news agency TT.

The activists had received information that the deportee was to be taken out of the country in a specially chartered plane.

Air traffic was stopped between 4.20pm and 4.35pm when the individuals entered airport grounds.

“They came in through or over the fence and ran out on the runway,” said Helena Miller, spokesperson for the Swedish Airports and Air Navigation Service (LFV) to TT.

A government plane carrying Deputy Prime Minister Maud Olofsson had its take off delayed by ten minutes before police were able to deal with the activists.

“It wasn’t a huge disruption in air traffic, but we take what happened very seriously,” said Miller.
