Germany won a total of 48 medals, including 14 gold in the Greek capital to finish sixth in the medals table of the 2004 Games.

"We want to at least achieve what we did in Athens, although we would prefer to improve on our results across the board," the DOSB general secretary Michael Vesper told Germany agence SID from Beijing.

The DOSB sees sports such as canoe (straight racing), rowing, equestrian, fencing and diving as sure medal getters, although it believes medals can also be won in collective sports like women's football and field hockey.

Germany's athletes' delegation for the August 8-24 Olympics will hit the 450 mark. Another 250 staff will travel, raising costs to an estimated total of €4 million.
