Little headway in missing girl investigation
Suspicions against the 42-year-old truck driver arrested for kidnapping 10-year-old Engla Höglund from near her home in Dalarna remain weak.
The man is being held for reasonable suspicion of kidnapping, a lower level of suspicion.
Police have another day to collect enough evidence to strengthen suspicions against the man. If investigators don’t succeed in doing so, the public prosecutor will be forced to release the 42-year-old on Thursday.
Leaders of the search are hoping that a further examination of the suspect’s car, mobile phone, laptop computer, DNA, as well as the girl’s bicycle, will lead to more evidence.
“We don’t have any results yet. So far there isn’t anything that takes us forward,” said Dalarna police spokesperson Sven-Åke Petters to the TT news agency.
The search for the girl in an area of Stjärnsund in Dalarna was discontinued on Tuesday afternoon. As of Wednesday morning no decision had yet been made as to whether or not to continue the search in other areas.
Police have received numerous tips, several of which include possible sightings of the girl in other locations and suggestions that police ought to search in those areas.
“It is possible we will but we haven’t yet decided to do so,” said Petters.
Much of the current police work is focused on compiling information gathered so far and interviewing various witnesses.
The 42-year-old suspect was due to be questioned further on Wednesday afternoon following the arrival of his lawyer, Jan Kyrö, to Borlänge in southern Dalarna, where the suspect is being held.
“My client is shocked that he was arrested,” said Kyrö.
The lawyer has still not been told on what grounds the suspicions against his client are based.
“I’m guessing that I’ll find out today,” he said.
Police have still not made contact with 10-year-old Engla’s father who resides in Spain. According to Petters, police hope to get in touch with him on Wednesday.
Police are also taking advantage of having the 42-year-old in custody to examine if he can be tied to several other serious, unsolved crimes in Dalarna, including the murder of a woman in Falun in 2000 and a woman in Avesta in 2006.
In both cases, police secured samples of the perpetrator’s DNA, which allows police to easily compare it with that of the 42-year-old and therefore determine whether or not he was involved.
