State should evacuate Swedes from overseas disasters

The Swedish state should be responsible for evacuating Swedes from major catastrophes which occur outside of the country, like the 2004 tsunami or the war in Lebanon in 2006.

The suggestion comes from an inquiry carried out by Västmanland county governor Mats Svegfors, the results of which are to be presented on Wednesday, according to the Dagens Nyheter (DN) newspaper.

But the inquiry also suggests that evacuees should pay for their own trip home.

The parliamentary committee led by Svegors will, according to DN, suggest the state take responsibility for evacuating Swedish citizens and others with ties to Sweden in the event of large accidents or disasters involving a large number of Swedes.

The decision to carry out an evacuation will be taken by the government offices’ new crisis management department, which became active on Monday.

Previously, no regulations existed for addressing these types of situations.
