Berlin transport workers cancel strike
A new strike by Berlin public transport (BVG) workers has been cancelled at the last minute.
In a high-level meeting just after midnight early Tuesday morning BVG leaders and public worker’s union Verdi agreed to rekindle talks in a long-running wage dispute. The two sides agreed there would be no strikes during this round of negotiation.
BVG, which employs some 12,000 workers, announced the cancellation immediately, and because buses and trains weren’t yet back at their depots for the night, BVG expects to provide uninterrupted service on Tuesday morning.
Verdi and BVG plan to base new talks on details of Monday’s agreement between Verdi and other public employers. The union hopes to get workers a 9 percent increase in pay.
BVG workers staged a 12-day strike in early March, paralyzing Germany’s capital city after employers offered only a two to five percent wage increase.
