The team, led by national coach Ermin Emrich, narrowly won against Sweden (27:26) and Croatia (22:16) in the qualifying round in Leipzig this week, securing their place in China.

"I still can't believe we've done it", said goal-keeper Clara Woltering after Saturdays game against Croatia, "It's a phenomenal feeling!"

Not since the Atlanta games in 1996 have both the women and men's teams of the German Handball Federation (DHB) played at the Olympics together.

Coach Emrich was beaming with pride after the qualifying round. "This is a really motivating moment," he said. "There's only one chance every four years and the girls really deserved to get it."
