Thousands without power in southern Sweden

Heavy snow falls have left thousands without power in southern Sweden on Easter Saturday morning.

Hard winds and heavy snow falls on Good Friday have pulled trees down on many power lines causing power cuts which have left 7,000 households in south-eastern Sweden without power.

The worst affected areas are around Emmaboda, Hässleholm and Karlskrona.

Electricity distributor Eon has hundreds of its staff out on the roads in the region working to remove snow-heavy trees from power lines.

"Most of the power lines are intact. It is simply a case cutting down the trees and connecting the power again," according to Jan-Erik Olsson, information officer at Eon.

Eon expects that the majority of households will regain their power by Easter Sunday as long as the weather doesn't take a turn for the worse.
