The German weather service (DWD) has announced a storm warning set to begin Thursday evening at 6 pm. The storm front called "Melli" will effect mid-altitudes and above in the states of Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Hesse, Thuringia, Saxony, Bavaria, and Baden-Württemberg.

Bavaria can expect heavy snow storms and drifting until afternoon of Friday, the DWD said in Offenbach on Thursday. Travelers should expect and roads and railways to be impassable. Some trees may also be damaged by the weight of the new snow, DWD added. More than 20 centimetres of accumulation is expected.

According to the agency, the storm will be a "massive wintry spell unlike any we've seen in the winter of 2007-2008."
