Search continues for missing Irish tourist
Police in Stockholm are continuing the search for an Irish tourist missing since the weekend.
John Aherne, 32, an accountant from Wicklow town in Ireland, has not been seen since stepping outside of a restaurant for a cigarette late on Saturday night.
Police spokeswoman Jackie Moberg said that a large number of police officers were called in to aid in the search on Wednesday.
"They searched the whole area, including buildings, refuse disposal areas and courtyards. We have also had police dogs down by the water, and we have people out searching with dogs again today," she said.
Aherne came to Sweden to celebrate Ireland's national holiday with his friend Karl Lambert. Having left a group of people at a city centre pub, he took a spare set of keys and stopped off for a drink at a restaurant in the same building as Lambert's apartment.
Aherne was due to fly back to Ireland on St. Patrick's Day, March 17th, but has not been since since leaving the Orion restaurant on Katarina Bangata.
"There were around 40 uniformed police in the area yesterday searching cellars, attics and public spaces. They're also putting up pictures," said Lambert.
Several members of Aherne's family have now arrived in Stockholm and are involved in the search. His brother is expected to fly in from San Francisco on Good Friday.
Lambert said he was hoping that somebody at the restaurant might remember seeing his friend. He said he had passed on his contact details to the organizer of an event being held at the restaurant on the night in question.
"Apparently there was a Greek women's convention downstairs in the restaurant. A lot of the women were smokers and some had come from different parts of the country. Someone might remember seeing John," he said.
Lambert could also confirm that police have checked all hospitals and prisons in the Stockholm area.
John Aherne is described by his family as being around 1.77m (5'10'') tall, weighing 79 kilos (12.5 stone), with black hair and brown eyes.
He was wearing blue jeans and a blue and white striped shirt under a light yellow wool jumper at the time of his disappearance.
Sweden's TV3 said that it would broadcast a segment about the missing tourist on its crime/missing persons programme Efterlyst, which airs this evening (Thursday) at 9pm.
Anyone with information relevant to the case is advised to call the police at 114 14.
