Police rule out foul play in death of young man

Autopsy results have revealed that a 27-year-old man found dead in central Stockholm at the weekend died of natural causes. Police initially suspected that the man died as a result of an assault.

The man was found lying unconscious on the pavement at the corner of Vasagatan/Kungsgatan in the heart of Stockholm's nightlife district. He was bleeding heavily from a wound to the back of his head. He was taken to hospital in an ambulance, where he later died.

"We attended the autopsy today and were able to learn that his death was caused not by a violent attack but by the occurrence of a medical condition," said police spokesman Lennart Olingdahl.

A police patrol found the man at 3.30am on Sunday morning. He was rushed to Karolinska Hospital in Solna where staff confirmed his death soon after 4am.

Police now believe that the head wound, as well as bruising to several parts of his body, were caused by the man repeatedly falling over.

Police no longer have any suspicions of foul play in the case, Dagens Nyheter reports.
