Sweden puts suicide reduction in focus
The Swedish government is to present a new plan on Wednesday designed to sharply reduce the number of suicides in Sweden.
Dubbed "nollvision" (zero-vision), the plan calls for creating conditions whereby no one finds themselves in a such a vulnerable position that they see suicide as the only way out.
“It’s a good thing to finally bring forth a plan to reduce suicide. But it has taken a very long time. Its unbelievable that people have accepted the fact that roughly 1,400 people take their own lives every year,” said suicide researcher Jan Beskow to the newspaper Dagens Nyheter.
The plan is to be presented by Health Minister Maria Larsson on Wednesday.
The plan calls for the establishment of a nationwide operation to investigate suicide, and a public awareness campaign spearheaded by the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) to spread information on depression , anxiety, suicide, and where people can turn for help.
