Storm 'Kirsten' set to hit Germany
The windy storm that's been hammering Great Britain for the last two days is on its way to northwestern Germany. The country has barely had time to recover from low-pressure storm "Emma," which killed several people and caused significant property damage less than two weeks ago.
Emma's windy sister "Kirsten" will likely arrive on Wednesday.
"The low is small but very intense," said German weather service DWD meteorologist Ansar Engel in Offenbach on Tuesday.
DWD expects gusts to surpass 100 kilometres an hour on Germany's northern coast. Thunderstorms are also a possibility in higher altitudes.
Engel said the turbulent weather is being caused by strong temperature fluctuations between Newfoundland and south Greenland, and the Atlantic to the south of the two countries.
Part of the same storm pattern causing flight cancellations, major traffic delays, power outages, and property damage in the UK on Monday. Gale force winds of 174 kilometres per hour were recorded in Langdon Bay in Kent county on Monday.
Also on Monday, the northern German town of Lübeck recorded a taste of what's to come - winds of 144 kilometres per hour.
