GM cuts threaten Saab jobs

General Motors (GM) is planning to cut up to 5,900 jobs from Opel and Saab as part of a cost savings plan.

Some of those affected have already been given notice, including 1,300 workers in Antwerp, Belgium, according to Auto Motor und Sport, a German automotive publication.

GM plans to eliminate jobs at Opel sites in Belgium, Germany, Great Britain, and Spain.

Saab’s factory in Trollhättan plant will also be affected.

GM currently employs 55,700 workers throughout Europe.

Around 900 positions in Spain and 500 at Ellesmore Port in the UK will be relocated to other factories in addition to the downsizing that’s already been announced at facilities in Bochum , Germany, and Antwerp, writes the magazine.
