Sweden unhappy with EBRD head selection process
Sweden and other EU nations are unhappy with the selection process for a new head of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the Swedish finance minister said in a newspaper report Thursday.
"It was contrary to the open and transparent selection process that was agreed to," Anders Borg said in the Financial Times Deutschland report.
"Other countries are also clearly unhappy with the process."
The European Union's Slovenian presidency announced Tuesday that EU finance ministers gave "overwhelming support" for deputy German finance minister Thomas Mirow to lead the EBRD.
Mirow beat out candidates from the Czech Republic, Hungary and Greece.
But the newspaper reported on Thursday that there had been an agreement that
countries could present candidates up to March 20th.
"Thomas Mirow is an excellent candidate and Germany's interest in that post is legitimate," the Swedish minister said. "But after the designation of Dominique Strauss-Kahn (as the EU's candidate) for the IMF, we expected another way of managing candidacies for the EBRD."
Slovenia's Finance Minister Andrej Bajuk told reporters in Brussels on Tuesday that "there is overwhelming support for the German candidate, Mr Thomas Mirow, and that is the candidate that Europe will present at the annual meeting of the EBRD."
