Women invade Stora Enso plantation in Brazil
Hundreds of women invaded Stora Enso's Fazenda Tarumã plantation in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul on Tuesday.
The women’s group Via Campesina believes the Swedish-Finnish forestry company is operating illegally.
Via Campesina claims that Stora Enso is breaking laws forbidding foreign companies from owning land in border areas.
“To plant in this green desert near the border is a crime against our country and against the pampa ecosystem,” said the group in statement released to the Brazilian media.
Stora Enso’s officials in Brazil point out that the company has requested an exception from the law.
The women’s protest hasn’t resulted in any major damages to Fazenda Tarumã, which sits near the border with Uruguay.
The Nordic pulp and paper industry is synonymous with controversy in the region due to disputes over Finnish Metsä-Botnia’s activities in Uruguay in recent years. The company has placed a pulp plant near a river that borders Argentina, which has generated environmental protests near the border.
