Detention orders requested for two terror suspects
Sweden's public prosecutor has handed detention orders over to Stockholm District Court for two of the three suspects arrested yesterday for preparing acts of terrorism.
Currently, there are insufficient grounds to seek a formal detention order for the third man, although suspicions about his involvement in the case remain, according to a statement from the prosecutor’s office.
Custody proceedings are scheduled to start at 1.30pm.
The detainees are also suspected of financing terrorism. All three deny the charges.
While detention orders have been filed for the 42-year-old and 37-year-old, the prosecutor found no basis for following suit with the 39-year-old, although he remains in custody, according to unconfirmed reports.
As of Friday morning, the man’s lawyer, Tobias Fälth, had not received confirmation as to whether or not his client was being released.
He said he was surprised over yesterday’s questioning of the 39-year-old.
“The questions he received were very general, directed more at what kind of a person he was and how he occupied his time. He wasn’t asked to answer questions related in any way to the financing of terrorism,” said Fälth.
Swedish and Norwegian security forced conducted coordinated raids yesterday, with three arrests being made in Norway on suspicions of similar crimes.
A group of Somali organizations in Norway are strongly criticizing the action, questioning if sending money back home constitutes “terrorist financing,” reports Norwegian news agency NTB.
The group writes that they will continue to send money to relatives or to those who are fighting against Ethiopian occupation.
