Travel trumps savings in Swedish households
Once the bills are paid, more Swedes elect to treat themselves to a vacation rather than save their extra kronor for a rainy day.
Following travel, home improvement projects are the second most popular use for any surplus left in household budgets.
Savings ended up ranked third in the study by bank and insurance company Länsförsäkringar.
Among those who have money left over, nearly one-third use their surplus for travel.
Almost one in five choose to undertake home improvement projects, with nearly as many choosing to save instead.
The study also showed that a substantially higher percentage of 16 to 24-year-olds save their money compared to those ages 40 to 69-years-old.
A total of 13,052 Swedes between the ages of 16 and 69-years-old answered the question “if you’re household had money left over, what would be the first thing you would do with it?”
Other answer choices included paying down principal on loans, buying a car, entertainment, donations to charity, and gifts to children or grandchildren.
