Sweden warns nationals against travel to Kosovo

Sweden warned its nationals on Friday to avoid unnecessary travel to northern Kosovo because of the security fallout in the wake of the Serbian province's declaration of independence.

"Because of the serious security situation, the foreign ministry for the time being advises against all unnecessary travel to northern Kosovo," the ministry said in a statement.

Swedes were warned to avoid all travel in the area north of the Ibar river, meaning northern Mitrovica and around Zubin Potok and Zvecan och Leposavic.

In the latest unrest sparked by Kosovo's declaration of independence, about 2,500 protestors hurled firecrackers and flares Friday at international police guarding a bridge in the ethnically divided northern town of Mitrovica.

Some 130 people were injured as rioters stormed the US embassy and other missions on Thursday night.

Sweden has indicated that it plans to recognize Kosovo's independence, but has yet to join the growing number of nations, including the United States, Britain, Germany, France and Denmark, that have done so.
