Investigators believe that a man suspected of pushing a 10-year-old girl into the water by City Hall in Stockholm may have been caught on security camera on the city's metro system.

Police are hoping that images from a station to the west of the city on the metro's blue line may help them unlock the mystery of the young girl who claims to have been kidnapped and pushed into the cold water at Riddarfjärden on Monday afternoon.

The girl told police she was standing outside a school in the north west of the city when she was approached by a man who forced her to accompany him to City Hall in the city centre.

They travelled to their destination by train, she said.

It is not yet clear what happened next. Two men who were sitting in a parked car by the quayside heard the girl crying for help at around 3pm. They helped her out of the water and called an ambulance.

The girl told the men that she had been pushed into the water. She was taken to hospital to be treated for hypothermia but did not sustain any serious injuries.

The incident is being classified by police as a case of abduction and attempted murder.

The girl was scheduled to be questioned more thoroughly about the incident on Wednesday.

"For reasons unknown to me the interrogation has been pushed back," said police spokesman Mats Eriksson.
