Kallur closes in on world record
European hurdles champion Swedish sprinter Susanna Kallur set a new Swedish record for the 60 metres hurdles with a world leading time of 7.72 seconds in Stuttgart on Saturday. Kallur is now only 0.03 seconds from a new world record time.
Kallur continued her warm up for an assault on the World Indoor Championships in Valencia next month with her second Swedish record in a week. She took a further step towards challenging the 18-year-old record held by Ljudmila Engquist which stands at 7.69 seconds.
Kallur was satisfied with her performance but explained that there is scope for improvement.
"I lost a little at the start. How much is difficult to say," she told Dagens Nyheter.
Kallur said that she ran better in Gothenburg earlier in the week, when she shaved 0.05 seconds from her previous Swedish record. The improved time was put down to the faster tracks in Stuttgart.
Talk of the world record would intensify after her latest personal best, Kallur conceded. The Swedish sprinter's next chance of challenging Enquist's world record is in Karslruhre next weekend.
