Swede to take the helm at Save the Children charity
The secretary general of Sweden’s chapter of Save the Children (Rädda Barnen) has been tapped to take over as chair of the organization’s international secretariat in London.
“It's very exciting,” said Petri Gornitzka.
She says she is committed to ensuring that Save the Children becomes a stronger voice for children’s rights and hopes that applying “more pressure” in questions involving children with help raise visibility of their needs.
Petri Gornitzka also plans to work hard to improve cooperation between Save the Children’s 28 national organizations.
“Together we can be incredibly powerful,” she said.
Since taking over as Secretary General in Sweden in 2002, Petri Gornitzka has overseen a substantial increase in both the chapter's revenues and its influence within the International Save the Children Alliance.
She is set to take over her new post in March, and it remains unclear who will succeed her in Sweden.
“An open recruitment process will begin shortly,” she said.
According to Swedish Television news program Rapport, Petri Gornitzka is both the first Swede and first women to lead the International Save the Children Alliance.
