The winds are forecast by Swedish weather service SMHI to draw in over western Sweden late on Friday evening or early Saturday morning, after which they will move eastwards across the country.

Wind speeds on Friday night in western Sweden could reach 28 metres per second (100 km/h). On Saturday morning areas of eastern Sweden could see gusts of up to 25 metres per second. Östergötland and Kalmar counties in south-eastern Sweden are expected to see the strongest winds in eastern Sweden. Gotland will also see heavy gusts.

SMHI has issued a Class 2 severe weather warning, the second most serious warning. The classification means that the weather could pose dangers to the public, cause largescale physical damage and disrupt important public services.

The agency is also warning that water could reach high or very high levels in rivers and lakes in some areas. Recent wet weather has increased the risk of roads collapsing in many parts of the country. The Swedish National Roads Administration is on high alert, according to Sveriges Radio.
