Cruise ships flock to Stockholm

Stockholm has retained its position as Sweden's top destination for luxury cruise liners.

This year, some 270 cruise ships are expected to dock in the capital, followed by 90 in Visby on the island of Gotland and 25 in Gothenburg.

Gothenburg has increased its share of the cruise travel pie. In 2000, just nine cruise ships pulled in to shore at the city's harbour, according to a statement from Port of Göteborg AB.

Visby dropped in the same period to its current tally from an annual total of 150. The slide is explained by the local tourist association as a result of the fact that the island no longer provides access to the largest ships.

Stockholm welcomed 150 cruise ships to its shores in 1995. By 2004, this figure had grown to 260 and the city is continuing to attract large numbers of luxury liners.

"This is down to a combination of Stockholm profiling itself as a destination and major growth in the cruise business," said David Schubert, marketing manager for Ports of Stockholm.
