Swedes flee Kenyan violence

Swedish tourists have been evacuated from Kenya following post-election violence. Over 300 tourists arrived home on Saturday having cut short their holidays.

Swedish travel operators Ving and Apollo flew home 354 tourists on Saturday morning from Mombasa on a specially arranged flight five days in advance of their scheduled return on January 10th.

Ving and Apollo staff have remained in Mombasa to take care of the few remaining tourists who will return home on scheduled flights. Several of Apollo's tourists on Zanzibar who had been scheduled to stopover in Mombasa will instead fly home directly from the Tanzanian island.

The tourists are thought to have avoided any first hand experience of the troubles and some had mixed feelings as they flew home, DN reports.

"It is unfortunate that they have been affected, but we follow foreign office recommendations," explained Lisa Lenneman at Ving.

A further 1,000 tourists will be obliged to find other destinations for their holidays as Apollo and Ving have cancelled remaining flights for the season.

Even if the foreign office was to amend its recommendation Kenya is off the tourist map for the time being.
