Four die on icy roads
Four people died as treacherous driving conditions caused a wave of road accidents in Sweden on Saturday. Forecasts indicate that roads will remain icy on Sunday.
One person died in an accident near Nyköping, south of Stockholm, in the early hours of Sunday; one person was treated for their injuries in hospital. A further three young people died on roads north of Bollnäs on Saturday afternoon as their car hit ice and collided with a truck.
Police had confirmed a further 10-15 casualties by the evening, none of which were considered serious.
93 road accidents were reported to police in southern Sweden during the afternoon.
The Swedish Road Administration (Vägverket) and SMHI has issued a warning for continued problems across the country.
"Driving conditions could be difficult in the beginning of the day, but conditions will improve as the day goes on. Mild air has pushed in over Skåne and the temperature is already around zero," says Alexandra Ohlsson, a meteorologist at SMHI.
Ambulance resources in Malmö were stretched and struggled to cope with the large number of accidents. 30,000 households in Malmö and 35,000 in Lund suffered short power cuts during the day as the bad weather took its toll.
Snow caused speed limits to be cut on major roads, including the Öresund bridge, throughout southern regions of Sweden. 10-15cm of snow was forecast for the night in some areas.
