The bus crash, which happened at 11am on Thursday, involved a Russian tourist coach and a local bus. The accident occured near Gagnef, between Mora and Borlänge, 240 km north-west of Stockholm.

Around fifteen people have sustained minor injuries, according to Christer Nelefelt of Dalarna Police.

Around 60 people were on the buses, including 20 children, emergency services said.

The accident happened when the Swedish bus pulled out from a bus stop, colliding with the Russian coach. The driver of the regular bus said he looked out of his rear view mirror but did not see the other vehicle.

The tourist coach, based in St. Petersburg, braked but was unable to avoid a high-speed collision with the other vehicle. Police say the road was icy when the crash occurred.

Both drivers were asked to give breath samples, but "there are no suspicions of drink driving offences," said Sven-Åke Petters of Dalarna Police.

All those seriously hurt were travelling in the Russian coach. The Swedish bus was carrying four passengers at the time of the crash, but none were seriously injured.

Emergency services said people rescued from the scene were being cared for in a local church hall.
