Gävle police were called to a building in the Brynäs area of Gävle at around 7pm on Saturday. A woman was found dead in a ground floor apartment and had not been identified by 10pm.

"We have several indications that the fire was not an accident," said police spokesperson Hesam Akbari. Akbari was reportedly unwilling to specify the details behind police suspicions.

Police have classified the case as arson and the crime scene will be subjected to a technical inspection on Sunday.

A 59-year-old man died in the fire in an apartment in Trelleborg while he was celebrating the festive period with family. A woman was rushed to hospital in Denmark for treatment for smoke injuries. Ten other revellers escaped unhurt.

Police and emergency services were called to the scene at around 1am on Sunday and the fire was quickly put out. Lars Rosberg of Skåne and Blekinge police described the fire as "very serious". The cause of the fire is as yet unknown.
