Swedish retailers 'still optimistic'
Looming problems in the economy have not dampened the optimism of Swedish retailers, who say they expect strong Christmas sales.
"Most are optimistic about sales in the coming period," said the Swedish Trade Federation's deputy CEO Yvonne Ingman.
The federation's survey on sentiment in the retail sector showed that there was a slight fall since November in expectations for the longer term. But only 8 percent of merchants said they were worried that the economy would have an impact on Christmas sales.
The federation wrote in a statement that it was "normal at the end of the year to be worried about the coming year's sales."
38 percent of retailers said that the Christmas shopping rush starts one week before Christmas. 2 percent say that the rush started in October; 30 percent said it started in early December. 14 percent, mainly in the building supplies trade, said they did not experience a Christmas peak.
Only one in three retailers said they would have a post-Christmas sales.
The survey was based on the answers of a panel of 150 shop owners and managers.
