Inger Efraimsson, chairwoman of the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan), has resigned in protest against tougher rules introduced by the government, Sveriges Radio reports. Efraimsson has held the post since 2005.

In a letter to Social Insurance Minister Cristina Husmark Pehrsson (Mod), the outgoing chairwoman explained that she did not intend to extend her contract, which runs out in two weeks.

Efraimsson said that she no longer possessed the level of loyalty necessary to continue serving under her employer, the current government.

The rehabilitation policies put forward by the government in a recent budget proposal presented a particular stumbling block, said Efraimsson, who spoke of a policy of "austerity towards the sick".
