Axfood and Coop join meat cheat scandal

ICA's supermarket rivals Axfood and Coop have both repackaged old meat in order to change the best-before date, according to SVT's main evening news programme Aktuellt. Two Axfood employees have already been sacked after health inspectors paid a visit to their stores.

The news follows revelations last week that four stores from the ICA franchise cheated with labels, as well as engaging in other poor food hygiene practices.

On Tuesday the four ICA stores at the centre of last week's controversy were reported to the public prosecutor by the National Food Administration.

Some 1,000 of ICA's 1,400 store owners attended a crisis meeting at Folkets Hus in Stockholm on Tuesday afternoon. CEO Kenneth Bengtsson conceded that the scandal may not be limited to the four stores filmed by SVT relabeling old meat.

"We can never rule out there being more merchants. We can't. We don't have control centrally. It is the merchants themselves who own the stores," he said.

The store owners were informed at Tuesday's meeting that ICA would carry out 3,000 spot checks on stores nationwide next year.
