Climate protesters demand action

A 'global walk for the climate' attracted 300 people in Stockholm on Saturday. So-called Climate Walks took place in 80 countries as demonstrators sought to put pressure on world leaders to act to avert a pending climate catastrophe.

The Climate Walks were designed to place focus on the United Nations' ongoing climate conference on Bali and to generate attention for local environmental issues. World leaders are urged to regard the threat to the climate more seriously and take the steps needed to prevent a catastrophic change in the global climate.

In Sweden further demonstrations were held in Gothenburg, Umeå and Lund.

Christmas shoppers were treated to mulled wine and coffee and plied with flyers by green groups such as Friends of the Earth.

It is the third consecutive year that the demonstrations have taken place. The walks were organised by several environmental groups such as Greenpeace, WWF, Cemus and the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation.
