Longer jail terms for murder

An interim government inquiry has recommended allowing courts to set longer jail terms for murders that are not deemed to warrant life imprisonment.

Under the new proposals, courts would be authorized to choose between a minimum of 10 years and a maximum of 18 years or life for murder.

A controversial Supreme Court ruling earlier this year meant that courts were restricted to two choices for murder sentences: 10 years or life.

In practice this meant that Swedish courts reserved life sentences for only the most extreme homicide cases, while most murderers were given ten year jail terms.

"The proposal means that considerably longer time limits can be set for murder than is currently the case," said the Ministry of Justice in a statement.
