The Social Democrats, Left Party and Greens want Sweden instead to join Poland and the Baltic States in examining the possibility of rerouting the pipeline onto dry land.

"If the government accepts the placement of then it is also silently accepting increased climate emissions and serious environmental risks to the Baltic Sea's sensitive ecosystem," said Mona Sahlin, Lars Ohly and Peter Eriksson, writing in Monday's Svenska Dagbladet.

The government should call a halt to the project for environmental reasons, they added, as well as rejecting plans to divert gas from the pipeline to Sweden.

The three parties also called for a decision on the future of the pipeline to be taken at a parliamentary level.
