Opposition still leading in polls

Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt’s Moderate Party continues to lag behind the opposition Social Democrats in a new poll. Reinfeldt is still viewed by voters as the more competent leader, despite the string of embarrassments that his government endured during the last month.

If elections were held today, the opposition would gather 54.4 percent of votes, while the governing Alliance would gain 41.2 percent, according to the poll conducted by SIFO.

The poll indicates that Moderates and Liberal Party were the only parties to record a decrease in the number of supporters this month, while the rest kept more or less the same number of supporters.

According to the November poll, the Social Democrats’ position remained exactly the same, while the Moderates’ dropped by 1.6 percentage points. Support for the smaller parties increased, with the Left party up 0.6 points to 4.9 percent, the Green party up 0.5 points to 6.7 percent, the Centre Party up 0.4 points to 7.6 percent, and the Christian Democrats by 1.1 points to 5 percent.

Education Minister Jan Björklund’s Liberal Party’s popularity dropped by 0.9 points to 7.5 percent, while support for parties outside the Riksdag dropped by 0.1 points to 4.4 percent.

Sifo asked a representative sample of 1,895 which party they would vote for if a general election were held today. As for leading personalities, the survey asked pollsters who they would like to have dinner with: 59.5 percent thought Sahlin to be better company, while 40.5 percent voted for Reinfeldt.

However, it was not all bad news for Reinfeldt. The poll indicates that 63.1 percent of those surveyed think he has more competence in office, while 36.9 percent voted for Sahlin.
