Union: 'Consultants undermine companies' skills base'

Sweden's leading white collar union, Sif, has expressed concerns over the growing number of tasks farmed out to self-employed consultants by industrial companies.

Sif's annual industrial survey has shown that consultants now make up more than ten percent of the workforce in a quarter of all companies, 30 percent in some cases.

"The figures are worrying. If the ratio of consultants to employees continues to rise there is a major risk that it will undermine the skills base within these companies," said union spokeswoman Åsa Johansson.

Her analysis was shared by Andreas Werr, a lecturer in business economics at the Stockholm School of Economics.

"Companies need to be careful about the business areas and roles for which they take in consultants, especially when dealing with the company's core business," he said.
