'Scrap Stockholm-Gothenburg flights'

Flights between Stockholm and Gothenburg should be scrapped within five years and replaced by trains, Sweden's Green Party has said.

There should be no flights on routes which can be served by viable train services, if Sweden is to meet its emissions targets, Green Party spokesman Peter Eriksson and MP Karin Svensson Smith wrote in Göteborgs-Posten on Friday.

The Greens say it would be possible to achieve their target within five years if improvements were made to rail tracks between Sweden's capital and second city. The stretch of track between Gothenburg and Linköping could be improved, they say, making possible to run high-speed trains along it.

"Of all forms of transport, flying is in a class of its own when it comes to climate-damaging emissions," Eriksson and Svensson Smith wrote.
