Police believe that a man in his fifties found dead in northern Sweden on Monday morning was most likely killed by a bear.

The bodies of the man and his dog were found near Valsjöbyn in Jämtland.

There were large bite and scratch marks on the hunter's head and torso.

Police also found bear droppings near the body as well as an area where a bear had ripped up moss from the ground.

Although it is very unusual for people to be killed by bears, this is the second case in just three years.

In October 2004, a 40-year-old hunter was killed by a bear near Jokkmokk in northern Sweden.

Before then, more than one hundred years had passed since the last bear-related death in Sweden.
