The light aircraft crashed into Nyckelsjön lake, 70 kilometres south-west of Stockholm, at 3.35pm on Thursday afternoon.

The plane, an SK50, suffered engine failure and crashed into the water close to the lake's southern shore, rescue services say.

"The two men on board were helped to land by Polish labourers who were in the area," said Lars-Olof Jöckert at the National Search and Rescue Centre in Gothenburg.

"I have spoken with one of the men. He was in some pain, was bloody and was suffering from hypothermia, but was otherwise OK. The same thing goes for the other person."

Rescuers were called in from nearby Gnesta and Gåsinge. Divers were also called in, but did not need to be deployed. Rescuers say that the plane has sunk.
