Sailors rescued after mayday call

Sweden's sea rescue service received a mayday call on Tuesday morning after a sailing boat listed and began taking on water off the coast of Öland.

All nine French-speaking crew members were rescued with the help of a fishing boat and a private vessel.

"They're all fine," said Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre spokesman Peter Lindquist.

The crew members had managed to climb aboard a life boat by the time the two boats arrived to take them ashore. A helicopter also arrived from Visby one hour after the mayday call but by then the rescue operation was already complete.

The incident took place one kilometre from Gårdby on the east coast of the Baltic island of Öland.
