The sides shared the spoils in the morning foursomes at 2-2 with Europe in a strong position in the unfinished afternoon fourballs, leading in three of the matches with the fourth tied.

The afternoon's fourballs will be completed on Sunday morning, followed by the final 12 singles after the second day's play from Halmstad was delayed by over two hours due to gale-force winds.

The US need 14 points to retain the Cup and Europe need 14.5 to regain it for what would be a fourth win from ten editions.

In the morning foursomes Europe staged late recoveries to split the points, with Suzann Pettersen and Sophie Gustafsson (against Juli Inkster and Paula Creamer) and Maria Hjorth and Gwladys Nocera (facing Sherri Steinhauer and Laura Diaz) both winning the final hole to finish all square.

In the other two matches Iben Tinning and Bettina Hauert lost to Pat Hurst and Angela Stanford 4 and 2 and Annika Sorenstam and Catriona Matthew beat Nicole Castrale and Cristie Kerr by 1 hole.

In the afternoon Linda Wessberg, making her Solheim debut, and the undefeated Maria Hjorth were one-up on Paula Creamer and Brittany Lincicome after 11 holes.

Trish Johnson and Iben Tinning were all-square after ten holes against Juli Inkster and Stacy Prammanasudh; Laura Davies and Becky Brewerton were 1 up against Natalie Gulbis and Nicole Castrale after ten holes, and Annika Sörenstam and Suzann Pettersen were 1 up through nine holes versus Cristie Kerr and Morgan Pressel.
