DIY sector enjoys record summer

Swedish DIY enthusiasts were in no way put off by the poor summer weather - they just took cover and kept hammering.

According to the Swedish Retail Institute, the DIY sector is well on its way to achieving a record summer with turnover for July up 14.3 percent on the same period last year.

Despite the rain, customers have continued buying garden furniture and paving stones. But this season's record sales have come mainly from indoor products like tiles, kitchen counters and shelving.

And with charismatic television DIY guru Ernst Kirchsteiger topping the ratings, hammers, planes and drills are selling like never before.

As the good times roll, new DIY warehouses are springing up all over the country. German giant Bauhaus, for example, is set to open its twelfth Swedish store this weekend with further expansion scheduled over the coming years.
