Injury forces Olympic champion Olsson out of worlds
Sweden's Olympic triple jump champion Christian Olsson has pulled out of the world championships in Osaka due to a hamstring injury, the Swedish athletics federation said on Tuesday.
Olsson has had problems with his left hamstring since February, and suffered a small tear at the Golden League gala in Rome on July 13th, the federation said on its website.
At Monday's training session in Marugame, "Christian tore the muscle again and reopened the injury from Rome. The muscle is not rehabilitated enough (for Olsson to compete) at the world championships," team doctor Sverker Nilsson said.
Olsson said he was withdrawing from all competition for the rest of the season to focus on his rehabilitation.
"It feels really uphill now but I've had many injuries in the past and I know how to come back even if the road can be a long one," said Olsson, who holds the 2004 Olympic and 2006 European championship titles.
Swedish decathlete Niklas Wiberg has also pulled out of the world championships due to injury.
Wiberg suffered a stress fracture in his right foot during a weekend training session.
The world athletics championships are due to take place in Osaka between August 25th and September 2nd.
SVT1 will begin broadcasting from the World Athletics Championships in Osaka at 8pm on Friday.
