Television cut-off 'could be sabotage'

Tuesday evening's disruption to television services for hundreds of thousands of viewers may have been a result of sabotage at a network plant in Gothenburg.

Executives at network operator Teracom say they believe somebody broke into the premises of Gotnet, the company's subcontractor in Gothenburg, before cutting a large number of fibre cables.

"Some person or persons went into where the fibre cables run and cut them. I can't say whether the damage was caused by sabotage, a break-in or vandalism," Crister Fritzon, Teracom's CEO, told television news programme Rapport.

The matter has been reported to the police.

Gotnet's premises are located in an industrial zone on the outskirts of Gothenburg.

For two hours on Tuesday, between 6.10 pm and 8.10pm, hundreds of thousands of users were left without access to television or radio brodcasts.

The disturbance came at an unfortunate time for many viewers, with Tuesday evening providing some of the summer's most long-awaited events: the DN Gala athletics meet in Stockholm, the football derby between arch rivals Helsingborg and Malmå as well as the grand finale of the ever popular singalong show Allsång på Skansen.
