According to Aftonbladet, Forssell passed away at his home on Thursday morning. He was 79 years old.

"This is a great loss for literary Sweden," said the culture editor at newspaper Dagens Nyheter, Maria Schottenius.

Forssell's literary career began in the 1950s as a culture journalist for numerous Swedish publications. But he was also a prolific lyricist, staging his own revues and even penning an entry for the Eurovision Song Contest in 1973.

But it was his poetry that won him the greatest literary acclaim and a seat on the 18-member Swedish Academy in 1971.

Lars Forssell won several literary prizes, including the Bellman Prize in 1968 and 1981, the king's Litteris et Artibus prize in 1993 and the Swedish Academy's Nordic Prize in 1998.
