A decade ago police recorded a nationwide total of 447 cases of blackmail. The corresponding figure for 2006 was 1,240, Göteborgs-Posten reports.

"Blackmail has risen sharply in recent years. It is a serious form of crime, which we in the police force need to tackle," Thord Modin, head of police intelligence, told the newspaper.

Police sent questionnaires on the subject to 10,000 companies around the country, of which 3,660 replied. According to police there were 950 cases that could be categorized as serious extortion.
